Records / History:
Brian Murphy was motivated to get into the gun business when he was laid off as a truck driver in 1974.

"I was reading a magazine and there was a notice about a gunsmithing school," Murph said. "I was always interested in guns. I spent my entire youth hunting and trapping. Here was a chance to put my interest in guns into a full-time career."

Later, Murph made the jump from a small gunsmithing operation to a full-service gun shop. Murphy's Guns opened eight years ago. Since then, it has grown into one of the most interesting shops in the West

As a new resident of Arizona, I knew very little about local gun shops in Tucson. I looked up a few in the yellowpages, perused their selection, and asked if they knew any other shops in the area. All of the other shops I asked mentioned Murphy's, and the shop's right near my apartment so I dropped by.

Upon entering, I spotted the rifle I was looking for all day -- a Bushmaster XM15 (AR-15 rifle) with a 20" barrel and full (non-collapsible) stock.

I was impressed with the prompt, pleasant greeting an employee gave me and the employee's knowledge about so many different types of guns (specifically AR15s, AK variants, and 1911 pistols). He answered my questions immediately, accurately, and professionally. He gave only factual answers, and clearly indicated when he was expressing an opinion rather than fact (something which frequently occurs at gun shops).

When I decided to buy this AR I did, the purchasing process was smooth and quick. No hassles at all; the longest part was me filling out the 4473 and the employee calling NICS which took about 5 minutes combined.

I was highly impressed by Murphy's shop and will definitely come back in the future.

I think this would fall under the category of just strange. I moved down to Tucson from Flagstaff this year and did my usual gun ogglin’. So when my income tax refund came in, I had a pretty good idea what to buy. Murphy’s on Country Club had a Remington Model 870 shotgun that was a steal, so I bought it. The employee was nice and it really was a good experience. I had thought that these pump Remingtons were about bulletproof, but this one wouldn’t feed right. The carrier would pick up the round from the magazine but wouldn’t chamber it. Never had that happen in a pump before! I figured it must be the ammo, so I bought a couple of new boxes, but the same thing happened even with the expensive shells. A call on the phone assured me that they would make it right, which was what I wanted to hear. I took it in that day and they said ‘We’ll have Murph’ take a look at it!’ Always good to have a gunsmith as a shop owner! I browsed the shop and after a few minutes he returned and started lecturing me on how to operate a slide action shotgun! I was flabbergasted, after he was done I stuttered ‘You were able to get it to work?’ and he swiftly operated the action which went smoothly. I asked him if he tried a dummy shell from the magazine and he wasn’t too happy, but by now the other customers in the shop had assembled. And he went muttering under his breath and dug up some shot shells and returned. He put three 2 3/4” shells into the magazine and swiftly pumped the forend back and then the thing froze right there. The group chuckled and had a few smart comments like most of us gun nutz do, nothing bad meant by it. The amazing part was Murph’ got red faced, cursed under his breath, and walked back to his gunsmithing area and THREW the shotgun which skittered into a corner somewhere! Now he DID tell his employee to give me an exchange or my money back, and I told the guy ‘Thank you there wasn’t a firearm in the shop that I had any desire to own.’ And the guy nodded, a little red faced himself and wrote me a check for the purchase. Very very unusual, never seen anything like it!

I'm a novice when it comes to buying a gun. I have just started to do some target shooting with a borrowed Baretta and decided to buy my own gun. I had an occasion to call Murphy's on the phone to get some information about a Ruger Mark II. On both calls I received a courteous response to all my "dumb" questions and I didn't feel at all intimidated. I can't wait to go to the store and see what they have to offer. I know I'll be pleased.

i have been buying and selling guns to and from Murphey's for over 20 years. The retail prices are mid-range, but the re-purchase prices are the best, since at Murphy's the gunbuyers will make a fair offer at usually 60-65 cents on the retail dollar while most other gun dealers will only offer you 30-35 cents of the retail price. That is the great value of Murphy's and the reason why I don't drive ten miles to buy somewhere else for ten dollars less.

This is were I do all my shopping for guns. They have an interesting selection of guns and will try to get what you want if they don't have it in stock. I have never had any problems dealing with the employees there as they have always been courteous and knowledgeable.

bought my first handgun today. it was a P07 reasonably priced, very clean, used.

the sales staff was helpful. the only fault i have is with the gun itself, there seems to be a fault with the slide stop that i didn't noticed in-store.

so far, thumbs up. at this point if i walk in tomorrow and they let me trade for a bersa thunder 9 UC ($60 less than the gun i got), i'd be happy. we'll see

I have no idea how these people stay in business. They have a very rude sales staff. I was looking at a .40 S&W handgun, when an older man came to where I was at the counter and reluctantly asked me "Can I help you?". I couldn't see too well through the glass case where the guns were and I asked him if the gun was straight double action (which is what I prefer). He rudely stated "It doesn't have a hammer. It's double action." then turned around and walked off. I stood there speechless. He obviously thought I was some dummy who didn't know about guns, but the fact of the matter was that I couldn't see the back of the gun through the glass. I went to Diamondback Police Supply and bought a gun there. Never again will I go to Murphys. If they can't treat people any better than that, they don't deserve my business.

The people who worked here (more specifically the woman who helped me), was very unprofessional and rude. When i came in looking for a specific brand of tactical shotgun, I asked her for some help. She said she would help me, then went about her business, completely ignoring me, after i asked her again multiple times for assistance. The firearm selection is good, but I'd rather find someone who actually wants to help me out when it comes to spending $400+ of my hard earned money.

I just purchased my second rifle from Murphy's. I had decided that I needed to get myself a new AR 15 before Mr. Holder gets the Obama Administration's Anti 2nd Amendment agenda fully rolling.

I was there when the shop opened last Wednesday morning and on my way home with my new Bushmaster AR 15 by 0945. The entire experience was a pleasure. There was a lot of good natured banter going on between customers and staff and I just had a good time spending my money.

A lot of shops are really taking advantage of the rumors floating about that the Clinton assault weapon ban is about to be reintroduced. Murphy's hasn't done that and I was very happy with the price I paid for this weapon.

I frequent Murphy's and have purchased several handguns, rifles, and shotguns from them. I find their personnel to be very knowledgeable and friendly. No pressure to buy anything and willing to show you anything you want to look at. The have an amazing inventory of used and new guns at reasonable prices. I'd certainly recommend Murphy's to anyone looking for a good gun shop in the Tucson area.

Murghy is a jerk!! I don't know how this clown has stayed in business this long. I put a gun on law away and soon after was unexpectedly deployed. Upon returning I was handed divorce papers. So I naturally needed all the money I could get. So off to Murhy's I went to get my money back. Now after buying 8 guns from this clown and being on a first name basis with some of the sales staff I thought he would be a little understanding of my situation. But NO!!! He proceeded to tell me that it was B.S that I had gone over my 90 days on the lay away and I should have called sooner and let them know so they could put the gun back on the shelf. Yeah like I had the chance to call from Iraq. Besides it was an assault rifle and he probably sold it before the close of business that day anyway. I have sent this guy a lot of business and spent over $7000 in his shop and this is how I get treated!! He can kiss my ass! I'll never step foot in that shop again. I don't care if I have to pay more for a gun "I WILL NEVER" go back there again!! Period!!!

Moved back to AZ from CA and called Murphy's to ask about gun laws and not only were they rude, they couldn't answer my questions. Even if an employee or owner can't help being a jerk they should be able to tell me who can and can not buy a gun in the State of Arizona. Dan's story above is absolutely frightening and if truthful brings to question the appropriateness of someone like that having a license to sell firearms regardless of their gun-smithing ability.

I've shopped at Murphy's from time to time in my last 20 years in Tucson. When they were located on River/Campbell, it was a pleasure to shop there, they were courteous, friendly and didn't talk down to you.
Now, I only go there if it is absolutely neccesary because, for the most part, they are rude, grumpy and make you feel unwelcome. I can tolerate a lot from people, however the staff at Murphy's pushes the limit when I come in.
It is unfortunate that they carry some hard to find items, but I think from now on I'll look elsewhere or order online, even if I have to pay extra.
Save yourself the trip and go to Diamondback or 2nd Amendment.

Stationed here at D.M. I accompanied my buddy who is from here and he purchased a used Colt satin nickel .45 from Murphy's. It was a good pistol but hadn't been modified to fire hollow points so he traded it on a used Glock; they gave him half of what he paid for it in trade which stung a little. The Glock had been "helped" by someone with a dremmel and it wouldn't go into battery properly, it wouldn't work right even using hard ball. They accused us of doing it and told him to contact the U.S. Distributor. The distributor told him the warranty had been violated and there was nothing they could do. We went in to give them another chance but they told us to leave the shop and not to return, which is too bad because they have a lot of guns.
