the Phoenix Rod and Gun Club, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the safe use of firearms in the pursuit of sporting competition, self-improvement and self-defense. The R&G Club maintains a rifle/pistol range, with target positions at 10, 25, 50 and 100 yards, open to the public on Saturday and Sundays from 7:00 am until 3:00 pm. The range has fourteen cement table shooting positions and is covered. Range fee is $5.00 for an unlimited time on a single day. A variety of targets are provided at a nominal cost. Ear and eye protection are also available.

read the review concerning horseback riders directly in line with the general, high power, and small bore ranges. I've seen riders present during active shooting and, in the absence of the rangemaster, people refused to stop shooting even when riders were pointed out to shooters. I've been a member for 14 years but haven't been able to get membership card, personal gate entry code for two years working through two successive rangemasters.
Organization and member support seems to be deteriorating over at least the past two years. It could be a good range and is the nearest alternative if you live in South Phoenix/Ahwatukee.

I joined here after letting my membership lapse for a time when I was working too much. I'm glad I did. It's a convient location with a excellent facility. They have a lot of good, well kept ranges for rimfire, rifle, and pistol out to 200 yards. Lot's of good shooting to be had here with good people. Ranges like this are going away far too fast. I'm glad this one's still here. Bill T.

This club is an accident waiting to happen. The Public Range shoots directly inline with the Max Delta Trail on South Mountain City Park. Hikers, joggers, and horseback riders are subject to direct fire from this range and ricochets. It is a miracle that someone hasn’t been shot out right or seriously injured (thrown from a spooked horse by a ricochet).
In all fairness, this club should be more aptly called the Phoenix Practical Gun Club. The principle leadership on the board of directors are made up of practical shooters who are hell bent in turning this range into their own personal shooting playground. At risk is the long standing Smallbore Rifle division who’s range has been wrecked by the construction of berms and eructation of illumination poles which literally cuts the range capacity in half. As a result of this disfigurement, the signature Roadrunner Regional Smallbore Prone Championships has been relocated to Ben Avery Shooting Facility.
If you are a serious Bullseye Pistol, precision Highpower, or precision Smallbore competition shooter and are looking for a club home to practice, STAY AWAY! Back room politics and the old boy (or girl) network is the rule of the day.

The range master is some yahoo who just sits around blowing hot air with those with time to kill. Membership entry codes are non-existent and everyone has to use the general entry ones. The officers must be so desperate they are willing to put up with no followup or no active management of the range, content with the drunken good ole boy who just lays around, refusing to answer the phone and return calls.
This range is spiraling downwards waiting for their 501(c)3 to be revoked and the land lease to be cancelled by the city of phoenix.

Theodore can you provide any more details about the lawsuit? Is it a result of their missmanagement of the club, specifically the public range between 2005 and 2007? Has Darrell F been removed as range master? He was in up to his neck, just like his mother!

I fine it peculiar that this club, who has been in existence since 1946, can not show any meaningful income generated from the years of dues collected. Let’s face it; if Phoenix Gun Club is truly strapped for cash, as all the members and board of director’s claim, the question everyone should be asking is “where the hell has all the money gone”? Surely their must have been some investments made over the years? A savings account or bonds to generate interest income? What has this club been doing for the past sixty-four years with all the dues collected? I doubt that all of that money paid for rent and operating expenses? Any reasonable person with some rudimentary financial savvy would have invested a percentage of that revenue. Every member of this club and the City of Phoenix should be asking this question “Show Me the Money”?

I am mad as hell. I have just became aware that the PRGC board filed theft complaint against the
former range master John Walker, last March. I have a copy of the police report. What has my
blood pressure up is the fact that the board has kept us in the dark for almost a year. At issue are
these points:
● The board should of notified the member’s of the theft by John Walker
● The member’s should of been privy to the club’s investigation and results, and
● Should of had a say to notify the authorities or not about the crime
Furthermore, Don Reed and the board of directors has put the our club at considerable risk.
Obviously there will be unwanted attention from the local media and it will also draw the
unwelcome eye of the City of Phoenix upon our little shooting range when this goes to trial.
There needs to be a special club member’s meeting to discuss this situation in the open.

I think this has something to do with the Bob Denis, his AZ CCW traning and all the money he put into renovating the class room only to be turned away by Don Reed and Deb Fretwell who felt that this was their personal shooting range. Nail the bastards to the wall Bob!
I can not attend tomorrows board meeting. Will someone please post a summary of the events. There is going to be some fireworks at South Mountain Wednesday evening.

The new President of PRGC, William Poole, has posted an appeal on the club's website for suggestions on how to improve this club. I have this, which I'll post here so everyone can see it and it won't get tossed by Mr. Poole. The club concept is DEAD. No one wants to take time out of their life to contribute to the maintenance and operation of this club. That is why PRGC is in situation it is now. The club needs to be dissolved and reorginized as a "Shooting Facility" like Ben Avery. The "Facility" maintains and schedules the events. The specific organizations that want to use the ranges, say Long Range Rifle, Junior & Smallbore Rifle, and Conventional Pistol, lease range time and pay a fee for access to the range. Further, the Public Range is staffed and open 7 days a week so that a constant flow of income is generated to operate the Public Range and supliment the General Operation funds of the "Facility". Also the staff needs to be reorganized. Rather than a President, Treasurer, and Board of Directors, there needs to be an Operations Manager, Maintenance Supervisor plus Range Staff, and a Comptroler. All paid a salary and required to work in the office, and in the case of the Maintenance Supervisor, reside on the range. This reorginazation should also prompt a reevaluation of the lease with the City of Phoenix. Just my two cents worth folks! What are your feelings on this subject.
