Review of this Rusian version of a combat red dot optic for the AK47. We had the chance to review and photograph a Russian Kobra 'red dot' style optic on a Saiga 12 shotgun made by Saiga (Izhmash) also in Russia.
It is designed for engaging fast moving targets and targets appearing for a short period of time in close quarters and urban combat situations in various light conditions. the Kobra is currently used by the Russian armed forces, including the most elite units of the Russian Special Forces. It has also been seen in service over the last several years in Chechnya, and is a battle tested design which has proven worthy of the Russian military tradition of reliability, form, and function.
This Saiga 12 is currently sold by Arms of America in Flagstaff, AZ And was modified by Ewbank Mfg in Winslow, AZ to use the standard AK pistol grip and trigger
This Russian Made optic sits low and close to the receiver cover Magnification is just1x (no magnification) so that either eye can be used to see through it, and can be used with eyes open and on the target. No need to look at the fight through the scope with tunnel vision. This is a very comfortble and fast optic
Clamps in place with the standard AK scope mount. This one locks into place when closed with a strong catch. It will stay on the rifle through most any abuse withtheis system. And when it's required to be removed, it's as simple of releasing the catch and swinging arm
Sight adjustment is under caps at the rear of the unit. (if only I could count in Russian) and On/Off, Dimmer and Reticle are around and below the unit, these dwitches are labeled in the image below
This optic has four options for the reticle an arrow, a dot, arrow with a dot, and three lines (two horizontal and two vertical) with 16 Brightness adjustment levels.
This model uses two typical AA batteries. You access them with a screw cap at the front of the unit. Battery life (using “Dot” mark under normal climate conditions) is 100 hours
The unit and mount stow together in the included pouch, It's unique shape holds and protects the optic and mount together.
This configuration allows for fast access to the unit if needed on the rifle, while offering a safe place to keep it clean and at hand when not in use
The mount locks firmly into place with a lever. The Kobra AK version is designed to fit all standard side mounting optics plates currently used on AK rifles. This includes the Saiga rifle and shotgun, all versions of the Romanian WUM, Romak, CUR, SAR variants, Vepr rifles, and many others
