ACH/MICH Ops-Core Head-Loc review

May 7, 2007

I had the opportunity to evaluate the ACH Head-Loc Retention System-X for the last several months and I am pleased with the quality/construction and performance from Ops-Core.

The Head-Loc is a replacement chinstrap assembly for the ACH/MICH ballistic helmet. They offer two versions; the Retention System X and Retention System H. Both were developed to improve the comfort, security, and convenience of the MICH/ACH. The quality of the materials and the construction of the unit is top notch, and they are made in the United States. The X version is designed to offer added mobility while still providing a more stability than the issue chinstrap. The H model was designed to provide even greater stability to the ACH. It is primarily for operations where a bit of mobility might give way to greater retention, such as jumping out of planes while wearing NODs. Ops-Core claims that the X system makes the MICH two times more stable under rotational forces and the H system three times more stable. I have utilized my X system while wearing a PVS/14 and have been very impressed by the stability it provides.

The added ease of adjustment is a very welcomed benefit of the Head-Loc system. It provides for easy sliding of the buckles both tightening and loosening. An added benefit to the improved buckle system is there is no longer any loose webbing flapping around.

The ACH is a very comfortable system, and the Head-Loc increases the comfort for me. The padding on the chin strap and the nape pad are made of a suede material, and even with dirt and sweat I do not notice any discomfort from them.

The straps also fit nicely around my MSA/Sordin Supreme Pro hearing protection. At first I was troubled by the wider fit of the fore straps because they were a little farther forward on my face than I was accustomed to. It soon became apparent that it allowed my EarPro to fit more comfortably this way and the wide setup no doubt adds to the increased stability of the helmet.
